KODAK Document Scanners Will Support the LINUX Operating Systems
via UBUNTU, FEDORA and SUSE Distributions
Kodak is the
first scanner manufacturer to integrate both TWAIN
2.0 and SANE Support for the LINUX Operating
System
WASHINGTON , March 10 - Emphasizing support for
open source and building on its previous
participation in the OpenUSB Project, Kodak today
announced at FOSE 2009 in Washington, D.C., the
availability of a robust, open source and
production quality scanning application for use on
the LINUX Operating System called ScanTWAIN.
ScanTWAIN functionality will support duplex
scanning at rated speed on automatic document
feeder (ADF) based scanners, like those available
from Kodak. The ScanTWAIN scanning application is
available via the SourceForge website and is
issued under GPL, Gnu Public License, version 2.
“Business needs continue to generate high demand
for specialized solutions and open source systems
offer a flexible, effective and affordable
option,” said Tony Barbeau, Vice President,
Marketing, Document Imaging, Business Solutions
and Services, Eastman Kodak Company. “Kodak is
pleased to offer new image scanning capabilities
and solutions via ScanTWAIN and our TWAIN 2.0 data
source, or driver, for LINUX Operating Systems.”
As a member of the TWAIN Working Group, Kodak
was influential in the creation of the new TWAIN
2.0 standard to fully support LINUX Operating
Systems. Kodak is the first vendor to offer all
the advanced scanning capabilities on LINUX OS
that are normally available for its products on
WINDOWS OS. In fact, Kodak’s TWAIN data source
user interface for LINUX OS provides the same
look, feel and functionality as the WINDOWS OS
version.
Kodak’s TWAIN 2.0 data source user interface is
fully internationalized, with support for English,
French, Italian, German, Spanish, Brazilian
Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Czech, Turkish,
Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese
and Korean.
Additionally, TWAIN 2.0 support programmatic
control of the scanner without a GUI, enabling
customers to create custom imaging solutions that
separate scanning application components over the
network.
Kodak also has released a SANE, Scanner Access
Now Easy, driver for those users looking for
compatibility with current LINUX OS based imaging
applications such as the GIMP, Gnu Image
Manipulation Program. More information regarding
the SANE protocol and project can be found at
www.sane-project.org.
