I just installed MS Office 2007 on XP platform and in the process my WIA capability returned to all programs.
I have no idea what was corrected but full functionality seems to be back.
Perhaps it was re-enabled in the process as you suggested.
Hopefully Canon will have your answer soon.
From my experience with them it will be my first and last Canon scanner
