    I have a Win 10 64-bit laptop and my scanner is a Samsung SCW-4100 printer/scanner.

I have two .ds files in windows\twain_32\Samsung\Samsung SCX-4100 Series — SCX4100.ds (2004-05-27, 876kb) and OEMDS.DS (2006-12-07, 276kb). I think these can be identified with Samsung user interfaces v1.10 and v2.02.17 respectively (jpgs available). Inspector Twain (jpg available) says I have v2.02.17.

32-bit applications (IrfanView 4.63, FineReader Pro 5, etc) work fine, and show the v2.02.17 interface. 64-bit programs have a problem. 64-bit IrfanView 4.63 fails to display any scanner interface. 64-bit GIMP2 says “plug-in crashed: twain.exe”.

64-bit IrfanView USED TO show the v1.10 interface, which I didn’t like. So I temporarily renamed SCX4100.ds to see how the application would react. It reacted by displaying no interface, and has continued to do so even though SCX4100.ds has been restored to its proper name, and after rebooting the machine.

Is this a known twain problem? How can I get back to seeing something (even v 1.10) in 64-bit applications like 64-bit Irfanview — if nothing better is possible?

64-bit TWAIN drivers live in c:\windows\twain_64. Unfortunately, that’s as far as we can comment. The issue clearly relates to Samsung’s driver, so you’ll have to contact them for support.

Thank you, Mark, and I understand you can’t comment on particular scanners, but my question to this forum, restated more succinctly I hope, was:

A 64-bit application (IrfanView, as it happens) was able to use a 32-bit twain driver (Samsung v1.10, as it happens), until I renamed a twain_32 file (SCX4100.ds), at which point the application predictably didn’t find the driver. What baffles me is that after renaming the file back, the driver can still not be found. Is there any explanation for this, from a twain point of view? It doesn’t seem to me to be a Samsung problem.

Just for the record, Samsung’s site redirects to a HP page for the SCX-4100, which offers no facility to ask a new question or to download an up-to-date installer/driver.
