I am trying to write an application in PHP that can grab a stack of documents from our TWAIN-enabled document scanner with minimal user interaction. (The goal being the user types in the details about all of the items they are about to scan in, then click “go” and it scans in the whole stack storing each item and logging them into the database with the details the user entered.)

    Any tips on doing this?

I may give the ObjectTwain COM object a try, but I’m hoping to find something open source…

You can try Scan2PDFX – it’s not free but it will do exactly what you are after and produce a PDF which it will then ftp/email/http upload.

http://www.burrotech.com/scan2pdfx.php – there are demos there that are written in PHP.

Not bad but not quite what I’m looking for.

It looks like there is a python TWAIN module that would allow me to do what I’m looking for, but I haven’t gotten it to work yet. I have a TWAIN scanner coming in today that I’ll be able to play with today though, so we’ll see if my office computer will work better than my home computer.

I think I may have found a non-free COM object I could open with PHP as well.
