I am getting this message when trying to access a Belkin USB High Speed DVD Creator device, “General failure in MSG_OPENDS. Bummer error.” I have reloaded the driver and even completely reinstalled Windows but the error came back. Any ideas as to what to do next beyond replacing the hardware?

How nostalgic, I remember when my manager at the time added that as a TWAIN error code…

When you say “access”, what do you mean? What application are you running at the time?

It is a program called Keyscan, it’s used for keeping visitor records and making visitor name tags. You can aquire an image from that software to put on the name tags. When you try to aquire the image is when the error occurs. I have reinstalled Windows and that program and it worked for about 3 days then started giving that error again.

Hmmm… The error is probably being displayed by Keyscan, but the error itself indicates that the Belkin TWAIN driver failed/refused to open. That usually isn’t something the application has any control over, except in the rare case of a DLL conflict between the app and the driver.

I would say Belkin tech support is the next best bet, since their driver is giving the error. Since the error takes a few days to re-appear (unless you are doing something to your system just before the error starts happening again) it sounds like the driver is corrupting its own state. Having to re-install Windows is incredibly over the top for a driver problem.

    Call Belkin tech support.
