I just got an Epson Workforce 545 multifunction.
the 32bit twain works great. but twack64 can’t find a 64bit source.Do any consumer scanner/printers support 64bit? I also had a Canon Pixma with the same issue and the support people are clueless as to what I’m talking about so we go in circles.
thanks for clarity!!
Most current TWAIN drivers are 32-bit only. They work fine on 64-bit operating systems, but are invisible to 64-bit TWAIN applications. This is because of two limitations: 64-bit processes cannot load 32-bit components (and TWAIN loads directly into the application) and the TWAIN manager does not magically bridge from 64-bit to 32-bit, or vice-versa.
The current work-around is to configure the part of your application that does scanning so it runs as a 32-bit process, e.g. compile to x86, or in .NET mark the executable as PlatformTarget=x86.
I know, easier said than done 😉Finally figured out my answer for twain 64bit: Adobe dropped support for twain in 64bit and wants us to use external applications, like VueScan or the app with the scanner. Problem solved: twain 64 is dead for Adobe, thus twain may just be dead when we all go to 64bit, like parallel printer cables.
Re: 64-bit TWAIN being dead.
The whole Adobe “we hate TWAIN so we’re pitching it” thing is a mystery to me. AFAIK, they’ve never discussed this with the TWAIN Working Group, nor have I seen them on this forum with questions, comments, suggestions, or even complaints. Maybe I missed it.
My personal guess is that it’s less about TWAIN and more about internal Adobe politics. Somebody got fed up with dealing with TWAIN support and pushed. Nobody heavier pushed back, et voila. The (literally) thousands of companies that have line-of-business apps using TWAIN every day… uhm… probably not going to go that way.
When desktop computers and paper go away, maybe then 😉This isn’t n Adobe only issue. As far as I know, TWAIN is 32bit ONLY. 32bit Apps on 64bit Windows can scan with no problem. 64bit Apps have no access to 32bit drivers. I read somewhere that a private company is working on bridging, but personally, I would rather see TWAIN.org work on a full 64bit version of TWAIN.
