We have a product which is a java web application hosted in tomcat and we currently have our own scanner interface and viewer using Activex control.
We need to replace the activex with the current market wide standard one. Could you please suggest the list of things which can be evaluated further.
As well is TWAIN Direct meant for that? if so when is it getting released?
For information about TWAIN Direct please look here: http://twaindirect.org
Work on TWAIN Direct is ongoing, but I don’t expect any updates on its progress until September. And for help with browser-based scanning, I recommend looking into the following vendors:
Dynamsoft (http://www.dynamsoft.com/Products/WebTWAIN_Overview.aspx)
Atalasoft (http://www.atalasoft.com/products/wingscan)There is also a TWAIN C# project that may be helpful, depending on what coding you’re looking to do.

TWAIN Direct is now fully released and available for production usage. TD solves your exact issue of not requiring ActiveX control because you can a create 100% web-scanning application without the need for any extra plugin controls.
For suggesting a list of things which you can evaluate, in addition to the technical links that Mark provided, I would suggest considering attending one of our TWAIN Direct Developer Day events (https://twaindirect.org/twain-direct-developers-day/). These are great to get access to many TWAIN Direct experts and develop your application together in-person.
Also, TWAIN Working Group also offer memberships (https://twain.org/membership/) and this is where you can participate in our weekly technical meetings to get updates on the TWAIN Direct project.
Thanks,
