Based on the TWAIN Direct Link (http://twain.org/twain-direct.html), this is a new set of specifications that can enable a device to interact with scanners without any drivers. Is this just a set of specifications or has a vendor implemented a product or API that uses Twain Direct specifications?
Howdy…
TWAIN Direct hasn’t yet reached ratification by the TWAIN Working Group. A draft version has been published and is being maintained for review and comment.
Unfortunately, it’s too early to discuss the plans of scanner vendors. I believe I can state with good confidence that TWAIN Direct will go live in 2016. At this point I expect it will be sometime in the second half of 2016.
If you have more questions about it, please feel free to ask.

The only spoecification for Twain Direct is dated 12/02/2014. I see here that they expected to have something this past fall, 2016. Is there anything going on with Twain Direct or has it been dropped?
Shall we give up TWAIN Direct?
I cannot see how I can recommend vendors to invest into it.
Best regards,
KaijMikeTwain seems to be dead. I’m writing 64 bit applications and I can’t find a single scanner that has a 64 bit Twain interface. A 32 bit version of my app has loads of scanner choices, but I’d rather not live in the past and built 32 bit apps. I was hoping that Twain direct would get around that, but it’s seems so far off that I’m going to have to go with some other scanner API. Probably the terribly limited WIA for windows, and SANE for other platforms.
KevinThe TWAIN Working Group is investing more resource on the TWAIN Direct effort so I would encourage anyone looking at TWAIN Direct development to get the latest updates and information.
